Has student politics in Nepal lost its relevance??
If we flip through the pages of nepal's history ,to figure out how significant students movements/politics has been to fight against the then current administration and to bring societal change is not difficult at all. It would be rather unfair not to give credit to the then student activism which made nepal today a secular democratic and republican nation. Not only in Nepal if we look closely all around the globe student activism has played a huge part in bringing changes unimaginable ,youths/students have always carried that burden on their shoulder to pressurize those in power to work in favour of the people . Switching back to nepal's context student activism dates all the way back to Rana Regime it was in 2004 BS asar 1st the first student movement was embarked named 'Jayatu Sanskritam ' demanding democracy and inclusion of subjects such as english, geography, maths and science among others in the curriculum of Rajakiya Sanskrit Vidhalaya. This movement gave more fuel to the fire that was spreading around against Rana regime and when the students got together with BP koirala to dethrone the Ranas , Nepal got taste of democracy for the first time in 2007 BS and the autocratic Rana Regime came to an end. This was not the only time student movements have played a key role to bring political change throughout nepal's history after 2007 student activism has been significant to bring down panchayat system or to end monarchy it has always been a key to achieve the change.
But now after more than 70 years of first student movement ,people have started questioning whether we should allow universities to let students be a part of political fractions or student unions . The first thing what we have to think about is why after all these years and such significant role in bringing political change student activism is being questioned? This is because student politics in nepal has definitely lost its way ,it has become a breeding place for power hungry individuals and student unions have become mere sister organizations to political parties to which they ideologically incline to. This has made student leaders puppets to the ones in power and students no longer question the wrong doings of government. They have certainly drifted away from their true agendas and have started to bear the flag of their respective political parties and they are forced to act according to the will of their masters, knowing all this it is only obvious to question student politics relevance. This has led to rise in anti political sentiments among students/youths, they have demonized politics and activism in their minds which is actually really concerning. If this remains the case, our economical , political situation will get only worse as best students from our universities will refrain themselves from getting involved in activism and the one to rule would be incompetent and power hungry individuals.
However this does not mean in anyway that we restrict our youths from getting involved in politics . In fact this is high time that we increase political consciousness among youths so that they could groom themselves into outstanding leaders of tomorrow . This is only possible if they get into activism during their college days. If more and more number of youths start to indulge themselves in politics it would be very difficult for the current puppets to remain in power and slowly everything will get right back on track ,this cleansing process however will take time. So to conclude student politics has a huge role to play during current transition phase of the country and even in the future but if we don't act now it might just loose its relevance and that would be a huge concern for the future of this country.
